Following up with our previous weeks post, engineers have created a new cathode for Li-ion batteries, improving their charging rate by up to 90%.

Li-ion batteries are commonly used in many electronics devices including mobile phones and tablets because of their high energy density, safety, light weight and ease of manufacture.

The cathode material in Lithium-ion batteries is the chief element in its limitation of an already high capacity battery (3.7 Volts). Engineers are now looking to fluoride-phosphates as a new element. In a recent set of tests, the new cathode material showed a high charge/discharge rate of only 90 seconds.
