Teslas battery sales larger than entire industry’s sales in 2015
Tesla Motors, an American-based automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells luxury electric cars, electric vehicle powertrain components, and battery products expects their battery sales to be larger than the entire energy storage system market last year.
According to an SEC filing, Tesla plans to sell 168.5 megawatt-hours of energy to SolarCity, the nation’s leading residential solar system installer, of which Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, is chairman of.
For context, the entire Behind the Meter storage deployments in the U.S. in 2015 was 35 megawatt hours, which was a 243% MW increase over 2014. The 168.5 MW Tesla sale is 60 percent larger than that (Source: GTM Research).
And that’s just the beginning. Musk believes that Tesla’s new Gigafactory will double the world’s supply of lithium-ion batteries for cars and homes in 2017 when it is fully completed.
